Boroondara Hawks 11. 19. 85 def Richmond 7. 7. 49

Borrondara proved too strong for a depleted Richmond team, with Jason Pollock out half way through the first quarter, Jayden (sugar) Sgardelis and Brodie out with sore knees but stayed on the ground for the entire match, Joshy Beams and Gavin Kennedy both with back strains also stayed on the ground.

I was MOST PROUD of the team seeing out the game and continued to drive the ball forward, all the on-ballers ran till they dropped then ran again, Hayden Binios (best on ground for Richmond) played a pivitol role On The Ball showing his leadership qualities, Hayden ran through packs fearlessly contesting the ball with disregard to his safety, set-up play through the middle and switched play when required. Benson Adams completely shut down their Centre Half Forward and played the best game I’ve seen yet. Chris Waiting played inspiring football off the Wing and had excellent disposals when under the pump. Gavin Kennedy and Rifkie Ergul played their best as always, at one stage Rifkie had three players on him at Full Forward.

A big thank you to Nick Papa (under 14’s) for helping out and playing good football, Nick hurt his wrist (very painful), but had it strapped and played out the game

I want to take this final opportunity to thank all the players this year and that I’m looking forward to all coming back next year at Colts level. I think the team has a fantastic future with Richmond Junior Football Club and again I’m proud of each and every one of them at a coaching and personal level.

Glen Iris 10 goals 10 points to Richmond 10 goals 6 points.

We travelled to Burwood Reserve to play in the first final. We knew this was do or die for us. Unfortunately it was not our day but the team did themselves proud. Phil was over come with the gusty effort put in and so were all the supporters that came to watch.

The best on the ground goes to Danny, James B, Conrad, Leo, Nasser, Kent, Junior, Andrew, Kaylem, Lucas, Nick, Jordi, Alan, Dion, James V, Winston, Miles, Wei Chen, Caleb, Luke, Tom and of course the girl whose final game it was Tilly.

This is my last report and there are so many people to thank….

Firstly the team themselves - well done boys and girl.

Our coach Phil who has taught us so much in the 2 years, he has been our leader.

All the people around the club - Les, Towey and Bomber who are at training week in and week out.

To all the parents who watched rain, hail or shine.

And to the helpers during the year Peter, Robert, and Jim for their duties performed every week, to Veronica and Effie for being our fill in runners and to our mums who did oranges - often fights as to whose turn it was. This made my job as team manager easy and a pleasure each week.

Now thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the friendship and kindness over the 10 or so years. Tilly and I have such great memories and will carry this for the rest of our lives - you really are a great footy family who we are proud to be associated with.

Bye and see you all at the presentation night.

Richmond 16. 15. 111 def Ivanhoe B 16. 11. 107

A four point win to Richmond was a huge boost to their moral after being beaten by the same team only just last week. This being the teams first finals win in all the previous finals game was a big step forward.

The game started well with both sides dominating at different stages of each quarter, at half time Richmond were nineteen points down, they boys dropped in confidence and let Ivanhoe off the hook for the last eight minutes of the second quarter. At the half time break my instructions were to back themselves, there was nothing to lose and to talk more, their confidence was shattered and they were only nineteen points down?? On ground rotations went well and everybody was waiting for someone to do something. Third quarter saw a confident well oiled, fine tuned Richmond outfit smash Ivanhoe by six goals to two. This set up a brilliant last quarter with a goal shootout for both sides, Richmond pulled away only to have Ivanhoe pull us back.

Chris Waiting (best on ground for Richmond) took control of the game during the third quarter, Chris’ run through traffic and goal shooting left us all in awe, the whole team lifted in confidence which prove the main difference in the end. Hayden Binios played fantastic football playing mostly in the middle and rotated with Rifkie Ergul at Full Forward. Both boys had purple patches and proved too strong for Ivanhoe.

Best for Richmond were Chris Waiting, Jason Pollock, Hayden Binios, Jayden Tran, Nick Clampet, Josh Beams. Brendan Gallagher, Athen Sgardelis, Gavin Kennedy, Brad Katon and Rifie Ergul.

I was really pleased with the team finally seeing out the game with a win, this being our strongest line-up for a while left Ivanhoe off guard and eventually gutted.

Park Orchards has defeated Boroondara by thity five points, so therefore we play Boroondara for a spot in the grand final, Ideally we may have some under 14’s boys help out off the bench as unfortunately they lost their semi final to Glen Iris.

Dare to dream

A rough day for the boys this week as a depleted Richmond side (fifteen players) couldn’t hold back Ivanhoes constant forward surge. Ivanhoe offered one player for each quarter which we accepted and put them on the wing. Ivanhoe had a full bench and it made sense so therfore everybody plays.

I was still very pleased with the ball carriers and midfield run, the back line played good football considering by the end we had at least four (4) injured players on the field which made rotations difficult fore tired players.

Best for Richmond and Ivanhoe’s coaches choice was Chris Waiting. Chris played mostly Half Back and Forward positions running off his player creating havoc numerous times. Chris has exceptional ball skills and excellent temperament when under pressure. Hayden Binios and Jason Pollock both had a big day out playing mostly on the ball and Forward positions. Haydos ran through the lines all day and Jason read the play just beautifully.

Josh Beams has lifted the last couple of weeks and it’s good to see him put his body on the line. Joshy has the ability to get in and under at the right time and reads the play with his good peripheal vision when in the packs.

Best for Richmond were Chris Waiting, Hayden Binios, Jason Pollock, Nick Clampett, Brendan Gallagher, Rifkie Ergul, Simon Brownsea, Gavin Kennedy, Emmanuel Majak, Josh Beams and Manfred Lee.

This being our last home and away game I want to congratulate the Richmond Under 15’s Football team on their endeavours so far, we are now in finals campaign and I’m looking forward to hopefully winning our first finals game.

We play Ivanhoe again on a neutral ground yet to be announced. This time we’ll be ready with a full side.

Goals: Junior - 3, Danny - 3, Kent - 2, Jordi - 2, Winston - 2, Caleb, Andrew and Dion 1 each.

What a difference a week makes. Where did this team come from. The old Richmond under 14’s are back to play the finals and you do do it the hard way as one parent said.

Richmond took control from the first bounce. They tackled hard, chased the opposition down and played contested footy. The delight was not only on the supporters faces but the team held their heads high as they continued to dominate the play again and again.

Phil was proud at every change and told the team to keep it up, don’t let Kew get back and this what playing final footy will be like.

What else can I say but welcome back and BELIEVE. You can beat Glen Iris at Burwood on Sunday. Game time 2:30 , according to the YJFL website but confirmation will be at training on Thursday.

Please rememebr that the team photo is being taken on Sunday, at 1:45. This is the last call and so if you aren’t there the photo will still be taken.

See you all at training and make Phil and the parents proud on Sunday.

Surrey Park-13 goals 13 points to Richmond 6 goals 13 points

Goals:Danny-3, Jordi-2 and Junior-1. The points should have been goals so no need to discuss this. Lets practice kicking through the big sticks during the week.

Not much can be said about our game today. The first quarter was ours with a 1 goal 5 lead at the change. We relied on a few players this quarter and Phil asked them all to try in the second quarter. We went out with our heads high.

Second quarter and again we had control but only for a few minutes. Surrey Park took control half way during this quarter and we let them get away again and again. Lucas tried to chase and tackle the BOG player and did a great job. However this wasn’t enough as its hard to play an 18 man side with 3 players giving their all. Half time and Surrey Park had the lead-score board Surrey Park 6-6 to Richmond 3-6
Phil was positive and encouraged all of us to keep trying, pick up the ball in these wet conditions and drive it forward. Unfortunately this must have fallen on deaf ears because Surrey Park come out and again took control of the ball. We seemed to stand and want the ball to come to us instead of aggressively attacking and fighting for the ball. We didn’t man up and overall seemed scared to even try. Points rained down as to did the rain and Surrey Park had a comfortable 3/4 time lead. Surrey Park 7-7 to Richmond 4-13.

We were still in the game if all players played their usual game. This however did not happen and we allowed our opposition to kick goal after goal taking a commanding lead at the end of the game. Surrey Park 13 goals 13 to Richmond 6 goals 13.

I normally don’t talk about best players in my report but today I have to mention Andrew. He played his heart out and only had one quiet patch and I think it was so he could catch his breathe. He tackled, chased, kicked and run the ball down at every opportunity. WELL DONE ANDREW.

Next week is our last game before the finals and we need a win to secure a finals berth as we are playing Kew at home and this is the only team that can take our place in the final four so your destiny is in your own hands. Phil wants everyone at training no excuses so be there. We need to train and work together so we get a better chance to have a place in the finals. See you all at training.

Richmond 10-18-78 defeated St Marys 1-4-10
This week we played St Marys at home and we began the day Zac Zoitas being presented with his 50th game medallion and along with Jacob and Jak was given the co-captaincy for the day.

For the first time in a long while we had an interchange bench as 19 players turned up to play this week. St Marys had 15 players so we gave them Jak, Nic and Jacob (alternating each quarter) so we could play 16 a side for the match.

The game started with us defending against an extremely strong wind but our backline lead by Thomas withstood a spirited challenge from St Marys who started well and how they have not won a match this year, based on this effort, is unbelievable. Our onballers ran well, supporting each other as well as helping the under sieged backline during this time. Brodie, Thomas, Luke, Braydon, James, Caleb and Carlos were standouts in this quarter but all players performed well and in the end we took a slim lead into the first break which was a great achievement as it took us 2 or 3 kicks to cover the same distance as St Marys got with 1 kick. The scores at the end of the first quarter were 1.5-11 to 1.3-09.

The second quarter saw the boys attacking with the aid of the wind but due to the swirling effect some balls were carrying longer than normal or hard to mark so if we were to score, we needed crumbers and Donal, Ben, Jacob and Antonio did this well holding the ball in our forward line until bigger bodies arrived or recovered from contests. During this time St Mary’s stacked their backline with all but 2 players so the game was played between 35 to 70 metres out from our goal until our players starting carrying the ball further before releasing it and kicked over the defense to set up some scoring opportunities. Once we kicked a couple of goals, one through Nic (his first for us), St Marys went back to a more conventional set up and this allowed us to find targets inside our forward 50. Caleb had many shots at goal and eventually found the goals after kicking heaps of points. Caleb, Brodie, Braydon, Luke, Ezra, Donal, Mathew, Carlos and Ben were standouts in this quarter but again all players did their job well (even Jak who was playing for St Marys). The scores at half time were 4.12-30 to 1.3-09.

At the start of the third quarter the players (as well as the parents helping on the ground) were subjected to a three minute hail storm, although mild, it was the first time our players have experienced this element in a game of football. Luckily we did not experience the hail the Under 15s copped in the later game which caused that game to stop for about 5 minutes (Thomas and Caleb can tell you all about it as they played for the under 15s). Speaking of firsts, Donal scored his first ever goal for the club today in a typical crumbing style where he gathered the ball in heavy traffic and swung onto his left foot and drilled it, all this happened in the 10 metre square and there was about 8 players in the square at the time. During this quarter, Nic (who was playing for St Marys) copped a heavy knock to the groin, from his brother, and really felt the effects for a long time. Our boys played fantastic football in this quarter and kept St Marys to a point while we kicked 1.3 against the strong wind. This was achieved by great running from Braydon, Brodie and Matthew while our defenders lead by Luke, Thomas and Caleb held up many St Marys advances. Maybe this is a spin-off from the Glen Iris game a couple of weeks ago as the boys were starting to look comfortable playing in strong wind. The scores at the end of the third quarter were 5.15-45 to 1.4-10.

In the last quarter, we dominated all over the ground resulting in us kicking 5.3 and St Marys being held scoreless. Antonio kicked 2 goals through good crumbing and clever snaps. Even though the ball was heavy and slippery we continued taking marks, bouncing the ball and delivering with confidence but more importantly we were doing the one percenters (sheparding, blocking, running in support and building a defensive wall) and this went a long way to our win and shows all players, parents and onlookers how far the boys have improved in their understanding of the game. Caleb, Brodie, Antonio, Braydon, Luke and Carlos were standouts but all players finished off the game strongly. What a difference having a bench made to this game as our onballers ran out the game and seemed to have plenty of run left at the end. Imagine if we could have done this all year. The scores at the end of the game were 10-18-78 to 1-4-10.

Our goal kickers were Caleb (5), Antonio (2), Donal, Nic and Carlos – 1 each.

All players should be applauded for their efforts, in conditions that made playing difficult and they are now handling the leather ball well in all conditions and this will give them great confidence going forward. The better players were Caleb, Brodie, Luke, Braydon, Thomas, Mathew, Ezra, Carlos, James, Donal, Antonio and in fact everyone did their job and played well.

Special thanks to Julie, Melissa, Mark J, Mark A, James, Mick, Dave and the Gorman family for providing the oranges on the day.

Important notice:
Our next game is our last and Julie (Team Manager) will be collecting all club playing jumpers after the match. Please bring a change of clothes as you cannot take the club jumper away with you.

Richmond 6-4-40 lost to St Damians 6-5-41
This week we played St Damians at home and we began the day with the taking of the team photo followed by Carlos Ahern being presented with his 50th game medallion and along with Luke was given the co-captaincy for the day.

We started the match with 16 players until Liam Hounihan and Joseph Do arrived after their game thereby giving us 18 players by the middle of the first quarter however St Damians got a jump on us and scored quick goals. Our backline was under considerable pressure and Thomas was holding up many scoring attempts with good body work and marks. Brodie and Ezra were providing good contests and got many clearances around stoppages while Carlos was winning most tap outs in the ruck. Bol took a strong contested mark and scored our only goal for the quarter but after the early onslaught our boys were breaking even or starting to beat their opponents. The scores at quarter time were 1-0-06 to 3-2-20.

The second quarter saw the ball go from one end to the other at good speed and both teams had winning half back lines and the only way either side could score was when a midfielder run and carried the ball then delivered over the half back lines. The match was unfolding into a great contest between 2 evenly matched sides. Our whole team not only ran well but began taking marks everywhere and for the first time in a long while, we gathered 3 or 4 possessions without turning over the ball – what a difference this makes to “fluid” play. James kicked our only goal for the quarter and the scores at half time were 2-2-14 to 5-5-35.

Q3 Scoreline 4-3-27 to 6-5-41
Q4 Scroeline 6-4-40 to 6-5-41
Our goal kickers were James (2), Caleb (2), Bol (1) and Carlos (1).
The better players were Brodie, Thomas, Ezra, Caleb, James, Bol, Carlos, Mathew, Luke and Lachlan.
Special thanks to Julie, Melissa, Gerry, Mark J, Mark A, James and Dave R for doing duties on the day.

Rest of report to be written at a later date.
